Insulation Basics

How insulation works

For something so effective, insulation is quite simple. Home insulation acts as a barrier to heat flow, and is essential to keep your home warm in winter and cool in summer. There are several types of home insulation available in Melbourne, so choosing the right type for your home is critical. Neco’s home insulation materials have a minimum R-rating of 3.5, and all comply with AS/NZS4859.1:2002. All materials are resistant to fire, mildrew, rot, vermin and insects. Our eco-friendly glasswool insulation is made from a combination of recycled and new glass which is melted and spun into a matt of fine glass fibres.

Insulation benefits

A well-insulated home will not only be more comfortable, it will be quieter as well, and could reduce your heating and cooling bills by up to 40 per cent per annum. Home roof insulation also helps to reduce your carbon footprint, as it reduces the amount of energy used to heat or cool your home. A well-insulated home could prevent hundreds of ‘black balloons’ from entering the atmosphere each year, so you can rest easy knowing that you are at the forefront of sustainable living.

Eliminating draughts

Insulation works by creating a perfect ‘blanket’ in your roof cavity. However, any penetrations to that ‘blanket’ will reduce the effectiveness of the insulation, leading to increased power bills and so on. Penetrations in the insulation can be avoided by a range of eco products, and exhaust fans are a good example. To minimise heat loss/gain through exhaust fan penetration, Neco installs Draftstoppas over all of our exhaust fans. These devices sit over the top of your exhaust fans; when the fan is switched on, the Draftstoppa’s flaps open to allow the air to vent. When the fan is not operating, the flaps are closed, thereby preserving that perfect blanket. Draftstoppas can make an important difference to the energy efficiency and comfort of your home insulation.

Down light safety

Do you have down lights in your home? Did you know that these down lights can be a fire hazard if they come into contact with insulation in your roof? Every year, hundreds of homes burn down due to down lights coming into contact with insulation, and that number is set to increase with the rapid increase of homes with insulation installed in recent times.

For $40 per down light, we can supply and install a down light cover that is fully compliant with Australian standards. We will also make sure that the area around the down light is free of any insulation or flammable matter, and we will also check all the lights that we have come into contact with to ensure that they are working well. We will leave you with an invoice and a 12 month warranty on parts and labour. Customers who purchase insulation from us will have down light covers included as part of their quote.
