Solar Basics

How solar power works

Solar power systems provide free, renewable energy from the sun - creating the perfect solar home! When the sun shines on solar panels connected to solar power systems mounted on your roof, it generates DC electricity. This DC electricity is fed into a solar inverter which converts it into 240V 50Hz AC electricity. AC electricity can be used by appliances in your home. Solar power systems for homes are usually installed on a roof. In Australia, solar panels connected to solar power systems should be oriented to the North to take full advantage of the sun, though West is sometimes okay depending on the location. Check out our solar power videos to learn more about how solar power works.

Solar power buying tips

Consider the following when buying solar power. First, consider the quality of the solar panels and your solar inverter. These components are the heart of your solar system and will have a direct impact on your solar power production. Second, ensure your solar power system is properly designed in order to maximise its performance. Ask for a free site inspection from a qualified electrician – this will tell you much about the quality of the solar power provider. You can’t sell solar power over a telephone alone!

Third, make sure the solar power system components and solar power installation are backed by comprehensive local warranties. All solar panels come with 20 to 25 performance warranties – what’s more important is the workmanship warranty on the solar panels and solar inverter. Read our solar panel buying guide for more information. And finally, look out for hidden costs – demand a fixed price solar system quote, and browse online solar power forums to read about other solar power customer experiences. Remember, if the deal looks too good to be true, it probably is!

Solar power for business

With power prices soaring and the carbon tax being introduced from 1 July 2012, there has never been a better time to consider solar power for your business, organisation or club. If you have sufficient roof space on your premises your solar investment could turn into a nice earner! For example, a 5kW solar power system could save around $1600 a year, and deliver a competitive return on investment.

We have installed many solar power systems on government and commercial buildings, and can assist you at every step of the way, from working out the ideal location for the solar power system (ensuring that it is visible for all your customers and patrons to see) to installing graphical monitoring solutions that show the solar power production and energy and carbon savings achieved. Our management team works closely with clients to ensure that products are delivered on time and on budget. We can also work with you to identify other ways to save power and carbon emissions.
