Solar Power Systems

How do solar power systems work?

Solar power systems provide free, renewable energy from the sun! When the sun shines on solar panels connected to solar power systems mounted on your roof, it generates DC electricity. This DC electricity is fed into an inverter which converts it into 240V 50Hz AC electricity. AC electricity can be used by appliances in your home. If you are connected to the electricity grid, any surplus electricity from your solar power system is fed into the grid. When your solar panels are not producing power (eg. at night) your power is supplied from the grid.

Where to install solar power systems?

Solar power systems are usually installed on a roof. In Australia, solar panels connected to solar power systems should be oriented to the North to take full advantage of the sun. The solar power systems inverter can be installed almost anywhere outside. Solar power systems should only be installed by BCSE (Clean Energy Council) accredited electricians.

What size solar power system do I need?

Solar power systems come in a range of different sizes to suit your roof space and budget. Solar power systems typically start around the 1 kilowatt (kW) mark (around 5-6 solar panels) and the sky is the limit from there! Depending on your electricity usage, a 1kW solar power system could produce between 10-30% of your electricity needs.
