Mount Buffalo in Victoria received 262mm of rain over the last week. That means that a staggering 81 billion litres of water fell on Mount Buffalo alone (based on the land area of Mount Buffalo National Park - approximately 31,000 ha). This is enough to fill over 32,000 Olympic swimming pools.

The rain falling on 10 square metres at Mount Buffalo would be equal to 2,620 litres of water - enough water to enable you to have a 4 minute shower every day for 57 days.

The rain falling on 100 square metres would be equal to 26,200 litres of water - enough water to fill half the average backyard swimming pool.

And the amount of rain falling on 1000 square metres would be equal to 262,000 litres of water - enough water to last a family of 4 an entire year.

So what's the point of all this? We want you to ask the question of yourself - where does all the rain that falls on your property go? And how much of what goes into stormwater and out to sea could be harvested and used in your home and on your garden during drier months? Do some calculations of your own - you may be surprised.
