As Australia's respective football codes enter their final rounds of regular competition, it's interesting to dwell on the environmental impact of our favourite games, beginning with that most blokey-of-bloke pastimes, the after-match shower.

Assuming our football heroes were to have a 10 minute shower after the game under a shower head with a flow of 15 litres per minute, between the AFL and NRL, the amount of water washing mud down the drain would be equal to 2,222,400 litres of water - around the same as an Olympic size swimming pool.

Under the same assumptions but assuming our football heroes showered under a 9 litre per minute shower head, the amount of water used would be 1,333,440 litres. That's a saving of 888,960 litres, or about half the volume of an Olympic size swimming pool!

So footy codes, it's time to either shorten those showers, or switch showerheads in the name of water saving!
