It was the Bathurst 1000 last weekend and up to 2 million people around the country watched the great race. But have you ever thought about the emissions produced as 31 V8 Supercars race for 1000km?
A V8 Supercar goes through around 70 litres of E85 fuel per 100km. It is estimated that E85 (a mix of 85% ethanol and 15% petrol) produces half the CO2 of petrol - around 840 grams of CO2 per kilometre - or 840kg over 1000kms. Multiply this by the 31 entrants in this years race, and the Bathurst 1000 alone is responsible for 26 tonnes of CO2 - and that's just for the race! It would be more if you included practice and qualifying.
At least they are using E85 fuel - regular petrol would produce closer to 52 tonnes of CO2 over the course of the race. To abate that amount, you would need to plant around 204 native trees!
